PRACTICE PROFILE – hurleypalmerflatt

Encouraging young people to enter the construction industry is high on the agenda of most companies, but Paul Flatt, group MD of hurleypalmerflatt, places it at the very top of his agenda because the future of the industry relies on it...

“Young people must be inspired. and engineering is inspiring by its very nature,” he says. “Without it, nothing would function or deliver the efficiency required to meet ever tougher sustainability and energy saving targets.

“hurleypalmerflatt is a dynamic multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy focused on being the best, not the biggest. That means hiring the best staff and providing the best training, working environment and opportunities for professional and personal development. Staff who join our team must have flair, professionalism and a will to excel!”

Stuart Bowman, divisional director of the company’s Energy and Sustainability Division, is one of the most passionate people you will ever meet. He joined the practice to set up its specialist division and has not only firmly established it, but has attracted so many clients that it has trebled in size. Naturally, his team of experts works as one with the other divisions.

“Sustainability is no longer for the bold, it is essential for every project,” says Stuart.

“Working in the field of sustainability requires a desire to educate”, he continues. “The word is used in so many ways, it is not surprising it can still scare even the largest organisations. This is where the skill to innovate and explain becomes crucial.”

The company does not expect its staff to come equipped with all of these attributes; they support and inspire them through the hurleypalmerflatt Training Academy. The academy creates an enjoyable learning environment in state-of-the-art facilities where staff can keep abreast of all building services standards and technical innovations, attend the best training courses, and be monitored against their individual annual training plan.

As a growing organisation, hurleypalmerflatt is keen to hear from people who are looking for a rewarding career.  Opportunities exist in its London City, Purley and Canary Wharf offices from graduate to associate director level across building services, structural engineering, IT and communications, FM and property consulting, building surveying, building physics, building sciences, health and safety and, of course, energy and sustainability.

The company also selects a number of summer interns each year and hires many graduates who have done specific or related degrees. Its accredited IPD scheme supports and guides graduates through the process of proving their competency in the 16 categories set by the Engineering Council. It also actively encourages graduates and engineers to attain Chartered status.

In short, hurleypalmerflatt wants to attract new staff, wants its existing staff to excel and gives them the tools to achieve this.
