Another interesting exhibit at EcoBuild was from York-based Lindum - a turf-grower that is ‘branching out’ into green roof materials. The company’s Grassfelt is a mature soil-less grass that grows on a moisture-retentive biodegradable felt; and it has recently launched a new version of this technology, Lindum Wildflower which, as the name implies, is a ready-grown wildflower meadow that can be rolled out like a carpet.
Nigel Dunnett, senior lecturer at Sheffield University’s Department of Landscape has been studying the performance of the material, and says that the mixtures of wildflowers offer the same performance as traditional green roof plants such as sedum, but have the additional benefit of promoting biodiversity.
