CLEVER solar-powered ventilation

The UK Association for the Conservation of Energy (UKACE) has published a comprehensive report on the Comfortable Living Environment and Energy Reducing Homes (CLEVER) project, which demonstrated two types of solar-powered ventilation technologies combined with energy efficiency measures in homes throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The CLEVER Homes project, which began in November 2004, aims to enhance indoor air quality, reduce domestic energy consumption and bills and improve the health and wellbeing of the householders.

The report focuses on the installation and performance of the Ecosmart and Sunwarm positive-input ventilation systems that gently supply tempered, filtered air into the home, replacing old contaminated, vapour-laden air. Both systems can use solar energy to warm the air entering the home, and can provide cooler air to the home if needed.

The report, and a supporting leaflet summarise the results of the study, highlight several practical learning points for anyone undertaking similar projects.
