On your marks! Get set … for product labels with sustainability at heart

Posted on by melanie

From 1 July 2013 most construction products will carry the CE label that is already borne by consumer products from toys to washing machines across Europe. Melanie Thompson of Get Sust! dips a toe in the alphabet soup of Euro-speak to explain why there is more to those two little letters than meets the eye, especially when it comes to sustainability.

When broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby asked a simple question at the Ecobuild seminar he was chairing (6 March 2013) it was difficult to know whether he was being deliberately provocative or uncharacteristically naive. The question he posed was part of a round-table discussion on the “performance gap” whereby completed buildings are failing to deliver the energy and environmental performance they promised on the (virtual) drawing board. If other industries can deliver complex engineered systems such as aeroplanes, pondered Dimbleby, why is building performance such a hit-and-miss affair?
